A Letter to WizKid & Friends

Dear WizKid and Friends,

Hope you are all doing well and as well as smiling to the bank 😀

Sure you don't know me and you are probably not sure why I am writing this but not to worry it is not one of your usual stories you read on the social media these days neither am I here to criticize you. A brief introduction of myself, My name is Tosin aka Uncle Tiz (as popularly known by my Fans 😀) and I run a "Children Entertainment Industry" (Startup). So I guess you know who my fans are now and if you are still wondering; my fans are mostly children and I am fortunate to anchor/plan their parties. Yippee... So I myself know a little about having fan.

Straight to the matter... I am glad to inform you that we have somethings in common, what would that be if you may ask, majority of my fans happen to be your fans as well. The kids I entertain happen to be the kids that listen to your songs. At this point I am not sure if I am to be happy about that or not. Please don't take this personal.

In accordance to what we do, I am always tempted to play your songs in my parties due to the popular demands of our fans and to be honest, I do play them sometimes even dance to them. Now by doing this, I am going against my values and standards of our Entertainment Outfit.  

Where am i driving to right? I will appreciate it if you could help in working on the lyrics, content of your songs. I have no personal beef against you as an artiste(s), but your songs at times are not palatable for our fans to listen to. Of cause, our fans love you but are you setting the right standards and values with the songs you write, sing and produce. I hope that makes sense!

The songs most of our children entertainers play these days are not appealing though danceable and perceived to have a lot of energy driven contents but I believe we can do better as entertainers, especially when it comes to children within the ages of 2-15years.

Let me use this medium to encourage you to do more of meaningful songs, songs that are not vulgar, sexually driven, etc.

I will drop my pen here and i sincerely hope this ticks in your brain.

Keep up the work but it can be better.

Party Songs or Party Jinx

Have you ever been to your kids' friend birthday party and felt a bit embarrassed because of the choice of music been played by the DJ and your pretty innocent boy/girl dancing really hard to impress the Uncle dangling party packs and gifts for the best dancer :). As a matter of fact, they even sing along every line of the music been played. I can categorically tell you that they are really having fun but... I know it's sometimes hard to ask them to sit down and watch while others have fun especially when he/she knows he/she can dance better.

 

The lyrics of our artiste's songs nowadays are majorly based on money, sex and fame which are filled with so much vulgar words. The extent to which they repeat the hit words in a particular song is ridiculously alarming, one would wonder if they lack creativity considering the numerous repetition of lines in a song. Unfortunately, those are the words our kids pick and repeat in their homes, schools, amongst classmates and even in the churches e.g. Take Banana till you go yo! (this line was mentioned 56 times in the song - this song is basically describing illicit sex between a guy and a lady) but trust me this song is a hit song in any Children party. So imagine if a kid sings this song once a day (for some it's more than that, trust me ;) ), in a week he/she would have said that line about 392 times and believe you me, they understand what that line means. You will also be amazed that some of our parents play these songs in their homes as well.

 

I heard of a story once from a Big Brother of mine, during one of the long school breaks, he had one of his little nephews who came over to spend his holiday with his family. As tradition and as a good Christian family, my big Brother would always conduct a morning devotion with every member of his family, sing praises and worship songs, share the word then finally pray together before they all disperse to their various place of work or school. This particular morning which also happened to be his nephew's first morning in his house, my Big Brother asked his nephew to render a worship song. The nephew who was taken by surprise also felt a little bit timid and embarrassed but he was further encouraged by my Big Brother, finally his nephew rendered his "worship song" - lorile o di gombe, o di gombe, bami so fun sisi.... immediately he was asked to keep quiet. Funny Right, well GIGO (Garbage in Garbage Out). You can't give what you don't have.

 

Do you know that it's what you take in, either by listening, reading, etc. that eventually build up to form your character which then becomes an habit then your way of life. For kids, it is a lot easier because they learn and assimilate faster. I know it is hard to control the type of songs they listen to because you are not everywhere with them, but you can help out as parents or as a guardian to let them know why they shouldn't "love" such songs. Please note that not all secular songs are bad, some are inspiring with safe content, etc. and yet it makes you want to dance and you can have a whole lot of fun.    

 

Because I am mostly involved in Children and Family Entertainment, I know one could be left with little or no option as to what songs you play otherwise one would entertain without satisfying the customers - The Kids. They cry out "Uncle! Uncle!!, we don't like this song, play us another one, play us DOROBUCCI...", one is most times forced to play the songs that they want especially if one is out of good and safe songs.
